Red-bellied Woodpecker

D1x, 300f4, iso 400, 1/500, f17 (shutter priority evaluative @ -1), SB800 (+0), handheld, ~15-20% crop.

I have been photographing my neighborhood RBWPs for nearly 10 years and have become pretty adept at finding them. They seem to be very curious and often respond to imitations of their calls or to quick tapping sounds. While driving on a lonely rural road I heard a RBWP as I was stopping at an intersection. I "called" the wp and was surprised to see it pop up out of a dead palm tree just a few feet away. I pulled off the road, assembled my camera, "called" the wp again, and captured this image from my car. Comments and critiques welcome.

Great Jerry I love the head position, the background is clean and the perch is something else. Very nice image.

Unusual perch and good lighting make for a very nice image.
