This was taken during an Arthur Morris/Birds-as-Art IPT at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for three days last week. I learned a ton and enjoyed every minute of it. This guy came so close that I could almost reach out and touch him.

EOS 3, 500f/4LIS, 2xTCII, 25MM of extension, on ground level with Walt Anderson Ground Pod, face in the mud and evaluative metering at -1/3. Full frame.

Please comment on any aspect. Thanks.

This is a really nice image.

The only thing I'd do to it is crop a bit from the top so the eye isn't so centered.

Exposure, focus and BG are wonderful.

Nice job getting so close! I agree it is more centered than I prefer, and the amount of torso visible is a bit awkward. You might even consider cropping to vertical. Love that dirty bill, and your focus and exposure are perfect!
(Betting the slightly-blown white areas show detail on the slide.)

I really like the detail you've captured here. I am a big fan of closeups like this and this one is very nice. It looks like the whites are a tad hot on the white collar and possibly a smidgen hot on the forehead as well. Overall a very beautiful shot though.

Great close up! I think it would be further improved by the suggested crop from the top with maybe a touch off both sides (to keep the same aspect ratio) for a less centered look.

Great job!

I like this shot a WHOLE lot!!! I agree that a wee bit of cropping might get the eye out of the center...

COOL!!!

Cheers,

All you need is a little different crop on this side. I've tried some head shots on these guys as they do come close but have never gotten one as nice as this. Geez....if he was that close, you could have even cleaned up his bill for him. Very nice job!

Christoph,

This is very nice. I love the amount of detail that you captured. The dirt on the bill adds alot to the image.

Great detail and the mud on the bill is a nice extra. Cropping per the other psoters.

Placement in the frame works fine for me. There are a few hot spots in the neck area but not enough to be of concern.
