Clapper Rail Rallus longirostris

This Rail was photographed in Stone Harbor, NJ just before sunrise using flash as main light. I would have liked to have been lower, but I was afraid that if I moved, he would be gone.

D30, 500mm f4 IS, EF1.4xII, ISO 400, f8.0, 1/80, 550EX + BB.

Any comments are appreciated.

Sweet, sweet, sweet. After cropping a bit from the left side, do not change a thing. The stick laying on the beak is great. The light adds to the mood. Great stuff, Bruce.

Bruce, almost any shot of a rail is a gift and this one is a keeper. I like it.

Bruce,
Knowing how secretive these guys are, I think this is terrific. I agree that a slight crop on the left would help.

Very nice! Well seen, and your focus appears dead-on in what must have been challenging conditions!

Like has been said, any rail shot is superb. I had the great misfortune two weeks ago to spot a virginia rail..when it decided to fly back into the brush. It was out in the open on the side of the road 6 feet from my car! I was so frustrated and sad that I had flushed it. I could have had head shot closeups!

As for this shot I agree with Sandy, the stick on the bill is a nice touch. Well done.

A good job indeed, Bruce!
The full flash works fine given the conditions you described ...

As has already been said...any shot of a rail is a goodie. :) And this is really cool, I like that you captured the behavior. Was this taken at Stone Harbor recently?

Heather,

This was taken on 8/14/03 at the Wetlands Institute. He was near the boardwalk that is along the path to the bay.

Did you ever do a good job on this one. To get one out in the open like this had to be a thrill. Nice choice of settings as well. The only ones I've seen have been in Sibley's!!!!

Bruce,

I'd be interested in your camera metering mode and flash comp (if any)on this one.

Mike,

I had the camera set to manual. f8.0 and 1/80 was evalutive minus about one stop. I used no compensation on the flash. I tried several settings and checked the histogram. This combination worked the best.
