I think I rather like this crop as well. You certainly didn't lose any detail and it focuses on the action more.

Mike,

The low angle and the wing stretch are a great combo here. The bird really stands out nicely from the OOF sand.

A bit of saturation and curves and the background really sings in this. I agree with Sandy that the flash was a bit over done for the whites. If you need a example posted, just ask.
