American Golden Plover
Churchill – Manitoba, Canada

During our visit to Churchill this past June we arrived with our carry on luggage but our checked bags were stuck in Winnipeg for the evening. This meant we had all of our gear except our tripods. We tried to make the best of the situation by scouting around, and came across this bird. We had one empty bean bag that we filled with rocks and shared to snap a couple of shots before moving on.

Our checked bags arrived around noon the next day.

Digital capture with Canon 1D
Canon 500mm f/4 with 1.4x teleconverter
Evaluative metering for 1/200 at f/7.1
ISO 250
Flash at -1.7
Beanbag filled with rocks

Heather,
Great subject with a bit of action along with the tundra and wildflowers make this one sing! Great shot.

Gorgeous, Heather. It doesn't get much better than this. The bird is just about perfect, and the purple blossoms in FG and BG push it over the top.

This is a real beauty! It looks like you had ideal soft lighting here to bring out the details in the dark areas.

Those flowers especially make nice touch. I was at Churchill in June '02 and few flowers were to be found anywhere. You picked a good year to go up there.

I wouldn't mind seeing more saturation here.

Whew! Great shot! That black is intense! This one convinced me that someday I will get up there to the tundra to shoot these breeding shorebirds. Love it!

Well done heather. I like the colors the flowers add. I agree a tad more saturation might be helpful. I wish this was mine!

Heather,

This is beautiful. I would be happy just to see this bird. It looks like your beanbag full of rocks worked just fine. I love the open mouth and the flowers.

Heather,
After seeing this shot I think I will sell my tripod and invest in some bean bags. Seriously, the colors of the foliage, plus the beautiful plumage on the bird, make this one super shot.
