Cayman Island Bats -- and their prey! (See LL) Apparently there are 3 species of bats living on the island, and I could not find any guide book that differentiated them, so any help in that department is definitely welcome!

This was actually taken in Rebecca's Cave, a smallish open-air cave made famous on the island (Cayman Brac) when residents took refuge there during a hurricane in 1932. A baby girl named Rebecca died and the cave was named in her honor. There are several similar caves on the island and they are still considered the safest place during severe storms.

Here you see two adults and two juvelines -- the second youngster is actually nursing, though that isn't obvious in this image. I chose this one because of the intimacy overall, and the accidental capture of a mosquito about to be eaten -- and it could not happen too soon!

Canon 10D (which autofocused when I could not have MF'd to save my life, VERY dim light!), 100-400 IS on a tripod, set at 210mm. Camera-mounted flash at -2/3, flash as main light. ISO setting 400.

Comments welcome.

Lillian

Wonderful image depicting a portion of the natural habitat and a 'family portrait' as well. Great sharpness where it needs to be sharp, wonderful exposure, and what a find - - - the mosquito! :?
The extra information on the caves, and some historical data is a bonus as well. Thank you.

This is cool! I too like the family grouping and that bug is a great bonus. I'm impressed that you could get a good composition and exposure with that dim of light. Good work!

Very cool!
The lighting is very good for flash as main, not harsh at all.
Well done.
Who says the 10D can't auto-focus :)

Lillian,
A very special photo under very difficult circumstances. You certainly pulled it off. Thanks for the additional info.

This is amazing timing. The bats alone are a great image and the mosquito puts it over the top, IMHO. Thanks for sharing.

In retrospect, holding the camera upside down to take this shot would have eliminated the flash shadoe

Cool bat shot!

EJ, That would have meant she would have had to put the tripod on the roof of the cave., but with antigravity tripod attachments it might have worked.
Well done, you nailed a great shot here.
