Brown Bear
Hallo Bay, AK

I have been posting a lot of good looking bears from my recent workshop with Charles Glatzer in AK. But not all the animals we saw were in the best condition. This sow, a first time mother, had been injured the previous month trying to save her spring cub from a boar. Our guide told us there was at least one boar in the area that was a 'cub killer' and that at least 2 spring cubs had been killed this summer.

Canon EOS3 with 500mmIS and 2x converter, Provia 100F, incident meter.

This is a very compelling photo and story. You can see the desperate sadness in her eyes and posture, head down on the front leg. The healing wounds add to the overall story.. Nature is efficient and oftentimes cruel, and we frequently forget this side in the making of nature art.. Thanks Cheryl, for sharing both sides in your posts. It was an incredible trip for you..

Great image that illustrates nature in the raw Cheryl. All the more poignant because that nose wound must be terribly painful and make it very difficult for her to eat properly.

Very moving shot.

Cheryl,

A powerful image, so often we only show the pretty pics and hide the fullness of nature.
Comments and reposts welcome

Very touching shot, accentuated by the pose. Lip looks really painful.

When you say boar, I presume you mean wild pig rather than big male bear? If the former, I'm wondering what it looks like since I would have guessed that this sow would have converted the boar to bacon and it wouldn't have had the opportunity to kill multiple cubs?

Thanks, that was my initial guess, but you sent me back to the dictionary and then I had second thoughts.

Cheryl, this image is a lesson in effective communication and wonderful in its own right. Thanks for sharing. I remember well this sow, with her sullen posture and scared face.

I am greatly looking forward to going back to Hallo Bay next year.

Best,

Chas

Cheryl,
Another reality trip in the world of nature. Some of these occurrences tear at your heart.

I was worried from the title about opening this image, and the photo did indeed strike a chord with me. I suspect you have to put some emotion aside to take a photo like this, and it's as important as the ones of perfect specimens that we strive to take. Thanks for taking it, thanks for sharing it.

A sad story and an image to match but that is nature.

This really hurts to see this but the image is very effective in portraying what happens in nature. Great shot, Cheryl!
