Here's one more black bear cub resulting from Charles Glatzer's superb STL workshop in August.
Canon Eos 10D, Canon 70-200 (non-IS) at 200; handheld, ISO 400; 1/60 at 5.0 (low light conditions limited aperture and shutter speed choices significantly). No flash. Cropped slightly on the bottom. Any comments or revisions most welcome. Thanks for viewing.

Nice shot and you might crop a little from the left to just get rid of that green. Juat a nit.

I don't know how 'passive' these bears are where you had the opportunity to photograph this cub, so take this for what's it worth. You may have been a little too close to this cub, especially if mom feels the cub has been threatened. At 200mm, even with the magnification factor of the 10D, a full frame shot like this may prove to be problematic. :?

Very cute. Looks like you handled a tough exposure situation well. Would like just a bit more room at the bottom (but you know what you cut out and I don't).

I don't think I can get tired of these bear images, they are so cute! This cub looks like it's posing for you, grasping the tree and turning the head makes this one for me.

jfred's comment reminds me of a similar comment I made re some cub photos posted elsewhere last year. In point of fact these bears are very tolerant of humans in this localized meadow area. Indeed, the momma would commonly walk past us and feed 50 yards or more behind us while her cubs were feeding in front of us. The only distress the sows (and the cubs) evidenced was at the approach of a male bear. We were all very careful to not create any stressful circumstances for these bears and I feel certain we were successful at that. Unless you have been there it is hard to picture but trust me, we were not intrusive and the bears essentially ignored us as they walked past within 6 feet of the photographer and tripod.

I think in a preserve area like this the animals must become fairly habituated and be very comfortable in the presence of people. I have seen Chas' concern and consideration for the welfare of the animals so I believe you joseph!
Anyway I like this a lot. I agree you've handled the tough exposure really well. Very cute position on the cub too.

Hey Joe, this is wonderful, and off the cuteness scale.

jFred, I fully appreciate your concern. Rest assured I take the welfare of the animals very seriously. Both the sanctuary personal and I go over bear safety with all participants prior to stepping on the grounds. It is my job to protect all the animals, human and otherwise while on location, and those who have participated know this full well. The sanctuary is one of a kind and you have to experiance it to believe it. Most participants say it was the experiance of a lifetime.

Best,

Chas

Hi Joe! That's a marvelous little critter. I like the facial expression and pose. I also like the bear-claw shaped light on the UL tree-trunk. 8)
