Beluga Whale
Churchill, Manitoba - Canada

On a windy and rainy morning during a trip to Churchill we decided to take a break from the birdies and go out on a Zodiac boat in search of Beluga whales. They seemed to be curious and friendly creatures, coming up to the surface (this one even breaching) to take a look at us inquisitive people with cameras.

Digital capture with Canon 1D, Canon 300mm f/4 handheld

Image comments/critiques appreciated!

Heather, you amazing. How you can hold a camera level to the horizon in a zodiac while taking a picture of a whale breaching is beyond me.

I'd love to see a touch more saturated color but that's just me. You did much better than I did chasing Dolphins in Florida.

ROFLOL, I remember you chasing those dolphins!

BTW notice that she did all that in the rain too!

Great Job Heather, you have to have ESP to get this shot! I struck out!

Okay, okay.

Disclosure: I cropped to correct the horizon.

As far as color, there wasn't much and I already boosted the saturation. It was just a dismal day, but an exciting adventure nonetheless.

Great shot, Heather! This is the closest view I have ever seen. I like the wet expression!

Great shot Heather. Looks just like you would expect given the weather and location. Marvelous work.

Another ROFLOL!

Nicely done. Like the straight-on look rather than from the side or back.

Great capture Heather. :D

oh yes and what a day it was. The rain didn't dampen the fun and laughs in the zodiac for sure. We still have to go through the majority of photos taken while in Churchill...winter works project.

Heather, this would be impressive even if it were taken on solid ground with a tripod. I really like the head-on look, and feel like I'm about to be splashed!

Great capture. I would crop the light area at the top as I find it distracting.

Hi Heather,

whale photography is something I’d also love to do one day. It looks like it is one of the last real adventures out there. And I love these animals, they are very ‘human’ somehow. The way you photographed this whale makes it look very active, full of motion. Very well done!

Airbus - the big European Aircraft Manufacturer - has designed and produced 5 huge transporters (aircrafts) to deliver aircraft components from one European location to another, this is part of their aircraft build process.

These transporters are called ‘Beluga’ and if you see them you’ll know why. They are designed after the animal in your image (okay, maybe not exactly this one :)). I have a couple of images up on Fototime showing those ‘Aircraft-Whales’. These images are only the first ones of a full series about Airbus, I have a lot more to upload but haven’t found the time yet to do so.

Not a lot to do with nature photography but anyway, here is the gallery, please come and have a look:

Best,
Sven

Very cool Heather! I'd love to see one of these let alone to get such a nice image. I agree with the comment that you about have to have ESP to get a shot like this- by the time you see the animal above the surface and press the shutter, they're back down again! This guy looks like he's smiling at you and happy to see you. And being able to straighten the horizon is for sure one of the advantages of digital
