Ground Squirrel Echo Lake, Colorado

This little guy was photographed last June up at Echo Lake near Mt. Evans, Colorado. Sheri and I had gone up to Mt. Evans to photograph the Mountain Goats only to find that the road was closed due to an overnight snowstorm. Echo Lake is next to the entrance gate to Mt. Evans so we went over there to see what opportunities existed. We found these little furry critters to be quite friendly and entertaining so we used up a few rolls of film on them.

Anyone know the ID of these guys?

Nice capture Bill

Amazing how the colours of the squirrel fit so well into it's environment. Pretty hard to find for a hungry hawk

Cute little guy! Not absolutely sure from the photo but this looks like a Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel to me. Squirrels do not have stripes on their face while chipmunks do. With no stripes this is definitely one of the ground squirrels. Nice shot!

Excellent shot. The GS looks nice and sharp and the BG is very smooth.

I edited the nomenclature on my post from chipmunk to ground squirrel. Thanks for the ID, Alan. :)

Bill,

Very cute. I like the amount of open space for him to look into. Makes for a nice comp.

This is definitely a Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel. Very common in the Echo Lake area. :)

Without a doubt a GMGS. Often mistaken for chipmunks by people who don't know of them, but as already said, they don't have stripes on their faces like chipmunks. But more obvious (to me, anyway) is the size difference. These guys are 2-3 times the size of the chimpmunks I've seen recently.

They're all over the place in the mountains in June/July, and as you say, are quite friendly. By August, they're already thinking about hibernation, though. Your shot shows a particularly chubby one, I think. :)

Very Cute Bill. The BG and rock are really nice and I like the composition and the tail draped over the rock....Good Job!

Very, very nice! No foreground or background distractions. I agree with the comment about the space the critter is looking into. Thanks for sharing.
