Hello NatureScapers..

Last October I had the opportunity to spend a week in Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. The elk rut was underway and the weather was variable but this particular day provided high thin clouds and wonderful even lighting. I was able to walk out from the road into a field and get down low, and a herd of elk walked by within range. This is full frame no crop..

He doesnt have the most impressive rack and is not the biggest dude on the playing field here, but I enjoy the photo for the bugling and the little bits of velvet hanging from the horns.

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions.

Wow, this is gorgeous. That soft light is just perfect to set off the textures. Love the composition too.

What makes this better than most Elk pictures is the way the Elk and its surrounding complement each other so well - all of the earth tones are great. There is something about D1X photos that just look so much sharper to me than any other camera,

Excellent shot Dennis.
As EJ says, the colours are gorgeous. And that dude is pin-sharp.
Congrats.

Dennis,

Excellent shot. I love the monochromatic colors and the comp is very nice. I really like how he is leaning left into the frame and the grasses at the bottom also appear to be leaning left as well. The image itself is tack sharp. Congrats on a winner.

Maybe not the largest dude or the biggest rack but definitely one of the "baddest" elk shots I've seen. As noted, the complementary colors, the sharpness, and the bugling with bits of velvet make this one superb.

One of my favorite elk shots. Razor sharp.

Very nicely done. This shows off some of those very subtle qualities that make an image like this work. The diffused light really makes the difference here.

He may not be the biggest bull in the field but you've captured him beautifully! Very nice image.

Beautiful picture with nice warm tones. I'll go out on a limb and say that he was not bugling when you took the photo, though. With his incisors showing like that I think he was flehmen or "lip-curling" trying to concentrate the scent of a female. When elk bugle, they cup their mouth and the teeth can't be seen. He may have bugled just before or after this. Again, beautiful image.
It could just be me, but could the image use a slight CC rotation???

Hi Dennis, this is really great! Years ago I lived and worked in Estes Park (I was there for 5 years) and your shot here really makes me remember just how incredible and approachable the elk are over there. They are truly spectacular, and so is your shot here. Very nice, and excellent colors.

Totally gorgeous colors and sharpness, Dennis. Would love to see many more in these tones and at greater distances. Nice!
