As you can see, the Birch Diet didn't work out for this guy. But he was certainly a very chubby moose- almost supersized around his waist.

His real problem was most likely lack of testosterone, which can cause deformed antlers. Considering how chubby he was, he didn't seem to be spending much energy chasing the girls. Nor did I ever see him show any interest in any of the neighborhood cows.

Unfortunately, I have yet to get a good picture of him this year so I had to post this one. This was on a dark, rainy day so I resorted to Provia 400F.

I'll try of find a shot from last year with a similar aspect from this year and merge them for easier comparison of the antlers. There's a substantial difference.

EOS 3, 70-200/2.8, maybe a 1.4 TC.

Thanks for looking.

There you go, embarrassing the poor guy again. Those antlers look more like hardened intestines than antlers.

The poor guy must have had a severe inferiority complex looking like this - no wonder he didn't chase the girls!!

Amazing sight!

This has been an interesting series. I'm amazed at the amount of deformity in his antlers.

Tim, I am glad you took, and shared this educational image with us. I think it is a superb behaviorial and editorial image, documenting a rarely seen malformity.

Best,
