Oryx, Oryx gazella gazella, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, November 2002, Eos 3 + 400/5.6, beanbag in window, Sensia 100, full frame

Another example of the awesome Oryx. This shot was taken late in the morning. The sun was high in the sky and burning. I was quite happy with the colours of these shots. They look rather similar as the other shots in the morning. I guess the colour of the Oryx helps me here. OK, again no catchlight, but I really like the position of the head and the looooooong horns.

What do you think??

Cheers

Peter

Very nice. I like how your composition emphasizes the antler length.

Nice going Peter. Your assessment is excellent. Good work on the exposure and the comp does really emphasize the horns. Can always add a catchlight in PS, in fact there is a little discussion on that right now in digital.. Thanks for posting..

Hoi Peter - I must say, I like the image a lot. On sunny days like in this image, catchlight is difficult to get without fill flash I guess. I like the composition, but would have preferred to see the horns clean and free against the background, i.e. without the tree between them. Cheers - Dick

Handsome as can be Peter. I like this.

Another composition opportunity would be to have the head turned a tad towards the camera, but not a full face turn, because then you're composition with bottom left to top right line would have changed. This is just a thought and not a crit.

Thanks,
Geurt

Great comp here. I love how the antlers are emphasized by the diagonal positioning in the frame.

Excellent shot here, Peter. I found trying to compose head shots of these guys very difficult, due to the awesome length of their antlers compared to their head size, and you handled it very well here.

This is a very nice image - the oryx is a beautiful animal and you have captured it well.

Thanks all!

Dick: Yes the tree was a surprice for me as well. Haven't noticed it during the shoot. It was a matter of seconds anyway, but still probably could have tried to get rid of it.

Geurt: I'm sorry, but I don't understand your idea...

Fill flash could have helped. I was at the moment quite happy with the reflection of the sand which made the dark shades light up a bit. Never thought about the catchlight (Which doesn't have to work always. In this case it would have though).

I think I'll post one more oryx here before I go on...

Peter
