I had seen this guy 3-4 days prior when looking for another moose which you'll soon see pictures of. He was in perfect health. Consequently I was very surprised to find him with this injury. There had been 2 other smaller bulls in the area, as well as a couple of cows, on my previous visit so I assume the bulls had been fighting and this guy took a tine to the eye.

He was feeding normally when I watched him. I've not seen him since in several visits to this area. Nor have I bumped into any of the other moose that had been in the area either...

Not quite as shape as I would like, but the softness is tough to tell at this file size.

EOS 3, 500, tripod, Provia at a slow SS, full frame.

Tim,

This was a very hard one to look at but it does show that not all of nature is pretty. Thanks for sharing a little more reality.

Tim, great job at showing the tough side of nature. Do you know if he's still alive?

Thanks for sharing, tough to look at without feeling sad for him. If the others are gone too then he is probably with them. Good to hear that he was eating well.

Oh that's nasty. Well documented to show how tough life in the wild can be.

Ouch that hurts...but you are likely correct in your diagnosis that he suffered a penetrating corneal injry.. Thanks for posting Tim

That is for sure hard to look at. I wish all the best to him. Very good job capturing an emotional shot.

OUCH! I hate it when that happens. Graphic shot but the moose will probably be fine...there's a lot of one-eyed critters running around out there.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Dennis- thanks for the professional diagnosis.

As I stated, no idea on his fate. Except for the eye, he was a very healthy looking moose.
