Bighorn Sheep
Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada

I just returned from a great STL with Charles Glatzer and Tom Hill. We photographed bighorn sheep, moose, elk, deer, coyotes... This image was taken the first day of the workshop and is one of my favorite ram shots. Unfortunately, we did not get to see any head butting on this trip although the rut was very close. We did see a lot of the pictured behaviour, `flehmen' or `flehming' where the male sniffs the female or her urine to assess her hormonal level and readiness for mating.

Nice capture of this behavior. Not quite as funny as the zebra however!

Very nice! I'm jealous - both of the shot and your fall schedule! One thing I like about the shot but don't understand: how do they get a bit of snow on the ends of their horns but have none on their head or face? Looks like they would have to tip their head to the side - or in this guy's case from side-to-side to get snow there.

Cheryl,

Very nice shot of the Bighorn. I don't know if you have any other views of this guy, but I would like this even more if you had dropped down a little to get just woods for the BG, without the merger of the snow/woodline. Just a suggestion, I would take this any day.

Superb shot Cheryl! Excellent timing to get the behaviour which is always accompanied by that glazed look in the eyes (must be a 'man' thing)

Gorgeous detail and love the snow tips on the horns too.

Cheryl, I think I have seen this behavior just before a bar closing late one evening-LOL

Comp and exposure are right on.

Best, and thanks

Hey, I've got a picture of this guy. (Taken same day, same place, but mine's just chewing some grass, not flehmen.)

Nice one!

Cheryl, I think he likes you! :)

I like the snow on the end of his horns that shows that he had been pushing it around to graze.
