A flawed shot, but an exciting encounter. We were walking along the nature path beside the Estes Park 9-hole golf course, one of the places elk congregate outside RMNP, when I noticed a bull on the far shore of Lake Estes looking like he wanted to cross to challenge the golf-course full. I ran down the hill to the shoreline, and sure enough, he started across. Midway, he paused and bugled several times. Wish he were higher in the frame, but the greater risk at the time was that I'd lose the rack out the top of the frame. For a print, the water could easily be made bluer (I had to desaturate it to get the scan to match the slide). EOS-3, 600 IS, 1.4x, Ev +1/3, 1/160, f5.6, RVP at 100 and pushed one stop.

Great catch of the behavior! I like how you include little stories of how the image was made, it adds a lot to the viewing of it for me.

I think this is a gorgeous capture. There is wonderful detail on the elk, and I like how it's looking towards the camera.

Do you like it better with the water a deeper blue? I like how this looks as is.

Neat shot. Very different from the typical 'bugling' shot. I like it.

Cool shot. Very nicely captured. Given the tools at hand getting all the antlers is the right choice. I'm not sure the water color needs to change.

Love the bugling in the lake and the rack against the water. The water looks to me like it has a bit of a color cast - magenta perhaps? The buck though looks spot-on.

Although truncated at the bottom this has a great amount of impact. I'm curious of the de-saturation of the water, it looks a bit magenta in tone and wonder if that is the result of the de-saturation or if the slide looks that way. The animal looks incredible and I even wonder how a crop of just the head and rack would hold up. I bet you are enjoying doing more exploring outside birds. I plan to do a little myself. ;)
