Wild Pony Grazing on Sand Dunes
Chincoteague NWR, Virginia

Many of us grew up reading the Marguerite Henry books about Misty of Chincoteague, but perhaps did not truly realize that wild horses in fact roam areas along the eastern coast of the United States - at least I didn't. Greg and I have been trying to get to Chincoteague so these ponies have been on my mind.

This was my favorite mare, she was a very willing photographic subject. I wrote a brief location article on Chincoteague with Bob Boner's assistance for general information about the refuge. It's a wonderful place to visit and I'm looking forward to going back. :)

Digital capture with Nikon D1
Sigma 50-500mm lens at 50mm, handheld
Matrix metering -1 for 1/1000 at f/8
ISO 200
Cropped to 8x10 format

Image comments/critiques appreciated!

Heather this is awesome. I love it. If there's one thing I would do, I would lose the contrail.

This is a nice shot and I remember how tame this pony was. The only thing I would change is to back up a little and include more of the environment. It is something I am always strugling with myself.

E.J., that is not a contrail, just a cloud. :D

Very nice shot. Taken form a nice angle especially as the pony was feeding.

I like your composition here, and the lighting on the the subject. To do it justice, though, I think you need to add some contrast and remove some of the digital fog. This is best done imo by a further application of usm as the final workflow element with values: amount = small; radius = large; threshold = 0. In the re-post below, the following values were used: 40;40;0.

Very nice shot - and one incredibly relaxed wild horse! (I suspect that you were in that position for quite some time as well though.) And Phil's touch up is very nice. I had never heard of using 40/40/0 at the end. Thanks for the tip, Phil.

There's an overall muting of the colors here which works very well. A very nice image.
