Fallow Deer (Dama dama) – Knole Park, Kent.

Canon EOS10D, 600mm/f4, Gitzo 1548 + Wimberley Head.
Manual exposure using incident meter, f6.3, 1/200, iso 400.

Photographed this buck about 30 minutes after sun-up, a couple of weeks ago. It is actually a composite. The moon was a few degrees to the south – about 2 frames away. I photographed the buck and the moon from the same position using the same exposure about 2 seconds apart and incorporated the images in PS.

Good shot Phil, I think the buck on his own would be fine - can't decide if the moon adds anything or not, but I suppose in an artistic sense it does fill the image more.

Love the over the shoulder pose of the buck though!

I like the idea and the animal is rendered beautifully. To make it better, blending the bottom dark rim of the moon with the sky either through feathering or through blending in the pixels with the cloning tool set to a 50% opacity would make it look more natural. As it is, you can tell that the moon was against a somewhat darker sky due to the darker rim at the bottom.

I like the deer much better w/o the moon. Great exposure on him! The moon looks artificially large IMO.

Phil, I really like the buck, but am undecided if I like the moon included or not, even if I didn't know it was a composite. It just seems to interfere with the animal. (Of course, that's only my opinion). You did get a really nice picture of the moon, though.

Cool shot Phil. I love the pose on the buck and am ambivalent about the moon.
