Maui late February.
Last February I had the opportunity to venture out in a kayak to visit with the Humpback Whales as they wintered in Hawaii. Richard Roshon (hawaiiwhalesrus), the pilot of the two person kayak was able to place us in the very close proximity of a cow, her calf, and a very alert escort (male) for over3 hours. While I have several pictures of tail flukes I thought I’d post a different image. This image is as the cow was sounding just to the left and toward the kayak.

WOW! Fabulous angle and DOF. I love the texture and gradient of light on the skin.

My wife and I have kayaked extensively in Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords and we'll see humpbacks occassionally. But she's convinced they're all related to Moby Dick- getting this close would result in a mutiny in the front of the kayak and an immediate divorce! :x

An amazing image IMO. The low angle really gives me a sense of this animal's sheer mass. I read a book years ago called The Moon by Whale Light, somehow this image seems to personify that title.

Wow, I think this is the lowest-angle whale photo I've ever seen -- quite an amazing view, with nice light and exposure and an excellent job of getting the horizon level in this situation. I hope you post a tail fluke from this perspective, I'd love to see it.

Different and interesting perspective. I like it.
The horizon is slightly tilted.

Great perspective and stunningly simple lines to this shot Bill - I like it a lot!

Low angle really makes this shot stand out. (Hope you've got some with a similiar angle and just the tail!) Might try reducing the grain in the sky a bit to make a good shot even better.
