The driver let us out of the truck along the Mara River to photograph hippos, and someone saw this one yawn and called it out to the rest of us. Canon EOS 1Ds ISO 100, 500f4 handheld, 1/400 at f4, polarizer, cropped almost full-height vertical from horizontal.

Good catch Matt! The grunting of these guys during the night is one of the great sounds of Africa for me.

You caught this one with great detail.

Good job!

Love the detail. Tough to get a hippo doing something "exciting." 500 handheld - I'm impressed! Would like a bit more room on the left; a fun shot nonetheless.

Nice teeth but could use a shave. Nice image. possibly a bit more room frame left would be nice.

Great shot with a lot of detail. This brings back a lot of memories of staying at Mara River Camp and listening to the hippos at night.
