This guy was shot a couple years ago at Piedras Blancas on the Central Coast of California. It's located right next to the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the most awesome drives in the United States. The interesting thing is this colony of seals is relatively new--less than 20 years--yet it is right next to a road that passes thousands of cars daily.

I must've waited for two hours for this guy to open his eye and finally gave up. These sub-adult males spend their days ashore sleeping and staying away from the big males trying to ensure dominance and their position among the other mature males.

Cheers

Make a noise like a big male and you might have gotten a very wide open eye!

Very different composition that works well here.

Really like the composition. Is this the colony near San Simeon? What time of year? Very nice and unique image.

Cindy, yes it is the colony near San Simeon. While seals will be there almost throughout the year. The best time for male interaction is just before X-Mas/New Years. Right after that, you'll see litterally dozens of pups born weekly from the middle of Jan through Feb. The place is amazing.

I can provide more specific info if you care.

And, as anyone who's seen my posts before, I try really hard to make original compositions. It takes a lot of eggs to make a good image but it keeps my brain working. I figure if you always shoot the same thing all the time, you might as well give it up.

Cheers

What a beatiful wildlife abstract. Just enough details to let you know what you are looking it, but still just accentuating one part of the animal. Just beatiful.
