This post is in response to Matt's great 'Elephants and Clouds' post a few days ago. His was taken in Amboseli National Park, and this one was taken not too far away at Tsavo East National Park. Tsavo is know for the extremely red soil, which Elephants bathe in, to keep bugs and sunburn away. In the middle of the park, there runs an underground water transfer pipe. The elephants knew where the water was, and they pounded on the ground, until the pipe broke and created their own personal watering hole. Needless to say, the authorities weren't very pleased, but it is a great place to view the elephants at the end of the day, drinking water. The combination of a 5,000 altitude for good light, red dirt for the elephants, and 10 minutes before sundown makes for a great shooting environment.

Enjoy

Sweet light and lovely colour tones Andy set this one off a treat.

Beautiful light and interesting clouds and the pano crop works well here.

I like everything about the image except for the cropped feet. The red elephants are great and the sky certainly evokes the feeling of Africa.

Great story, Andy. What innovative elephants! I really like the added touch the red earth gives here.

A really nice shot. The colors are great and the pano crop works very well. IMO two things to make it better. A bit more room on the bottom so as to not crop the feet and to move your copyright to the other side so as to not obscure the elephant.

Very nice shot Andy, a great combination of red dust and warm light really makes the elephants look special. I like how the closest grandma is turned so you can see her tusks. I agree that the panoramic crop really works the way you've done it, and that more space on the bottom is a possible improvement.

thanks for the replies, all. I agree about the crop on the bottom. Problem is that the water pipes are all in the foreground, and that is what I was left with. And regarding the copyright, this is just an internet posting, and I don't put the copyright on my prints that I print out. Breezebrowser just puts it in the same location every time! I guess by putting it in a location where it is visible, nobody would be able to take the image easily. Better than putting it in a blue sky area.

We got the BS from our guide in 1981 in Kenya. He finally fessed up that the red was the dirt, not the elephants, after keeping the joke going for 1/2 hour. We live and learn. :D

yeah, there is a lodge in the park, called the 'Red Elephant Lodge', and people who stay there are convinced that the elephants are actually red. ha ha ha.

A very nice shot in incredible light. The Elephant at the right with the feet slightly cut-off are the only detractor.
