Many birds and animals exhibit warm, loving behavior towards each other after mating. Lions don't seem to fit in that category. We came across this pair on our first morning game drive in the Masai Mara, and it took me about six attempts with LCD reviews to finally figure out how to get a decent capture of this two-second behavior after each brief mating period, spaced about fifteen minutes apart. This was my last chance, since the others in the vehicle were ready to go look for something else. Canon 1Ds and incident meter, 500mm lens at f5.6, 1/400, ISO 250, full-frame.

Holy smokes! All sorts of unpublishable things come to mind when viewing this image. Very cool shot.

A dedicated photo safari, 14 photographers in five land rovers, 5.5 shooting days in the Mara, 2 shooting days in Lake Nakuru, 2 shooting days in Samburu, then with a smaller group for 2 days of gorillas in Rwanda and 3.5 shooting days in Amboseli.

Matt, Great work at capturing both faces with loads of expression. At least both seem equally unhappy.

I came back to this thread to come see the photo again. I have to say that this photograph is one of the best wildlife images I have every seen. Truly amazing. I have seen many mating lion pairs, but getting a great shot like this isn't always so easy. Great emotion, technically 'right on' and a great composition.

Congrats, and thanks for posting.

Excellent!

I guess they move to the divorce stage faster than a couple married in Las Vegas on a Friday night! :D
