A Western Diamond Back Rattlesnake photographed at the Laguna Seca Ranch on 3 April 2024.  Z9, 600 pf, 1/500, f/6.3, iso 1250.  Looks a little better viewed large.

Great photograph of a beautiful Western Diamondback. The down-to-its-level, face-to-face perspective works so well with snakes.

Terrific close up and low viewpoint Gene. Sensible use of a 600!

Gives me the shivers, but it is an amazing shot. I like the flowers to offset that formidable face.

Cynthia,  I think that Rattlesnakes get a bit of a bad rap.  A few week ago I was at the ranch making repairs and cleaning up.  Three times I came within one or two feet of a Rattlesnake when they were hidden and they paid me no mind.  As long as a Rattlesnake is not surprised or harassed, they are generally docile and just want to be left alone.  Don't get me wrong, if I see them, they get great respect and plenty of room.

Thanks , Gene. I am sure they can be quite  calm in the right situation. They are endangered and protected here in Vermont. Still..I would not like to meet one under any circumstances, not knowing if one might feel threatened. It is a beautiful photo, in any case.

Outstanding texture in this "striking" image. As mentioned the low level you achieved is perfect.
