This image was captured on a trip last summer to the Pantanal. We were cruising along a tributary of the Sao Lorenzo River when we spotted this jaguar hunting along the banks of the river. I was somewhat perplexed because I could see nothing the cat might be interested in; there were no Cayman and no Capybara in sight. Then all of a sudden water was splashing everywhere, and along the rivers' edge the fight was on.

The short answer:
The snake escaped relatively unharmed-from what I could tell.

The long answer:

The snake began to wrap itself around the face of the cat, and the cat placed one of its paws on the snake to dislodge the snake’s grasp. In so doing the cat lost hold of the serpent, and it swam away. In reviewing subsequent shots the cat did not sustain any bite injuries-that I could see.

Thanks for asking, Axel.

Is that an Anaconda? I know the jaguars go for them along with their other prey subjects. Sounds like this one met its match - and what a great action shot, Chuck!

Yes, sorry-I should have mentioned that in the narrative; a Yellow Anaconda and of course, a Jaguar.

The menacing open mouth of the Anaconda adds a lot to the image's impact. The cat could have just as easily become the victim if the snake could have wrapped itself around it. Jaguars are my all-time favorite cat.
