An early morning (03:00) encounter with a red fox (Vulpes vulpes), high in at the arctic north (70° 32’N;30° 36’E)  of Norway.
It only lasted for a split second, enough for me to squeeze off three rapid frames, before it turned and disappeared into the tundra.
Yet that piercing gaze and the intensity of the moment stayed with me for days - indescribable.

[Previously this isolated arctic refuge would have been the domain of its Arctic cousin, Vulpes lagopus, who sadly has disappeared from this region, and whose continued survival in Norway is in question. The combined pressures of climate change, insufficient numbers of lemmings. and intrusion by predatory species possibly sealing its fate. As such, the only place in Scandinavia where one may still see the Fjällräven in future, is on the outdoor clothing logo..... :(

Wonderful sighting Sinuhe. Whilst understandable, it still is remarkable to see the heavier coat they need up there.

I know exactly how you felt at that moment of eye contact, Sinuhe, with a wild animal it is so precious to share such intimacy.  A lovely sighting of this beautiful fox in its lush coat.  :)

I can see why this made such an impact- what an incredible experience. That look says it all.

Such a beautiful fox-your story is a sad one, but glad to see this species in any case. Love the eye contact-so memorable when that happens.
