Reindeer
Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Reindeer were easy to find around the town of Longyearbyen.  They are shorter and stockier than Reindeer found in other places.  Unfortunately they either had their face in the grass eating, or were lying down!  Not very active animals.

Great setting and soft light, Cindy. I guess they learned to not spend too much energy.

Sweet little sub species and a nice image.  You got some lovely shots from this trip!   I don't think you would be doing much jumping around if this is all you had to eat in the best foraging season, Cindy.  This cow also looks pregnant, they give birth in June, so she is ready to drop her calf.  These Svalbard reindeer certainly are smaller than other herds. I understand a female may only weigh 50+ kgs in Spring/Summer - up to their heaviest in Autumn at up to 70kgs  my dog weighs 51kgs.   :)
