Spiny Soft Shell Turtle

The most elusive turtle ever. Very hard to get anywhere close to these guys in the wild. I try every year... this one was sunning as the weather is warmer now. Taken from a boat hand held in very stark light at


600 mm - f/6.3 - 1/2500 - iso 450

These guys are tough to get shots of. There are a lot of them at Bosque. They can move really fast over land, too. Nice to catch one out in the open like this.

There are many at this location but I have never seen them on land… only on outlying rocks. I would love to see one on land.

This is how I usually see them and as soon as I stop, they are in the water.

When I saw one crossing the dirt road at Bosque one time, his flippers were moving so fast he was literally flying. They are incredibly fast.
