Found on rocky shores throughout mainland New Zealand, as well as parts of Australia. They have external ears, hind flippers that can turn forward under the body and walk on and no fur on the under side of their flippers.

Excellent topside view of this seal as it rests. Interesting in that its fur seems camouflaged compared with the local rocks.

From this perspective it could easily be mistaken for one of the rocks - and looking at the thumbnail I thought the smaller rock was its pup. Good camouflage on their favoured rocky shoreline, Zig.

That's just what I thought too. Very interesting information about their flippers-I've never heard of such a thing.

Great camouflage and like Carol, at first I was wondering if the rock next to it was a pup. :)
