A soft-shelled turtle on a ditch bank at Bosque on Friday. They are fascinating creatures.

Its amazing the difference when the shells dont have the usual epidermal scales that we've come to expect with the different turtles we find, Joe.  I've never seen one of these soft shelled varieties so thanks for sharing this one. :)

Its good to see the variety of creatures you are seeing on your Bosque trips!

Good look at an interesting turtle. From what I recall of them as a kid I believe they are fairly aggressive and don't appreciate being handled. Nice to see some wildlife in addition to birds from Bosque.

Interesting species- thanks for the view! I think there is a spiny soft-shelled specie around here though I've never seen one. Nice spotting this one!

They are so elusive, I have not seen one without water around them. They sure look pre-historic. Very fortunate and nice capture.

Thanks for your comment. I once saw one crossing the road at Bosque and I don’t think that this turtle is the reason turtles are thought of as slow!!! They can fly quickly overland with those strange flippers of feet! They are usually very fast to disappear into the water, as you noted when you posted an image of two on a bank a while back.
