This is a very old Rattlesnake that was very easy going.  I was working at one of the blinds and looked over and saw him sound asleep about eight feet from me.  Didn't pay him much attention and finished up what I was doing and went inside the blind to photograph birds.  The birds didn't much like having a Rattlesnake at the water's edge, so I got a rake and attempted to get him to move along.  He was pretty adamant about staying right where he was, so I decided to take a few images.  He finally got tired of me and moved into the undergrowth.  Contrary to some beliefs, some Rattlesnakes are much more docile than others.  You just have to be careful.

I always treat snakes with great respect, and preferably from a sensible distance, but they are beautiful creatures. Great skin detail, and love that golden eye looking at you, Gene.

I have never seen a snake so close, the drawing on the skin and inside the eye is incredible.
