This Pine Martin completely caught me off guard as I was in the high peaks area of the Adirondacks last Winter walking with my hand held camera at sunrise looking for birds when I saw something out of the corner of my eye.  This appears as though he was just hanging out but in reality he quickly came out of the cavity and scampered up the tree.  Wish I had greater DOF but it was what it was as there was no time to mess with settings.

You must have good reflexes, Warren! Pine Martens are so elusive and can move like lightning, especially when you're not expecting them. I think this is a fine capture with excellent detail where it matters - and an image anyone would be happy to have in their files. Well done!

Carol.

You're quick reflexes paid off - the depth of field looks just right to me. Nicely composed, too

I see no issues with this- a fine capture-quick thinking to get it at all. Nicely seen! Wish I could even see one, let alone get such a nice photo.

These guys are such beautiful creatures, so photogenic - if they sit still of course! This could work as a vertical too I bet with all tree/bark background. Looks like a youngster perhaps? I want to go out a find me one of these guys now....

Thank you so much for the EP !! It's a very nice honor.

In response to Gary, I tried several compositions, including your suggestion, and they all seemed OK but I settled on the one shown in order to give context to the environment. Also you may be right about it being a younger animal because on my walk back I saw another one scampering around out on tree branches that 's face appeared lighter (older?) . I only was able to get one quick decent shot of it that I will probably submit at some point.

Congratulations on your really ready reflexes!
You have made a great capture, very well managed, well composed and well contextualized.
The attitude of the small subject is also very nice.
