To me, this behaviour is a show of dominance by the older elk by putting his head over the neck of the younger one - who is subservient to the more mature bull. When the youngster is more mature, with his own full set of antlers, the interaction between these two could be much more aggressive!

Normally I would agree with Carol's comment. However in this case I don't believe that is what is going on. If you look closely at the front elk, his antlers have been broken off. They would likely be the same size as the guy in the back. I watched these two over the course of 4 days. They are part of the bachelor herd. They spent everyday together, grooming each other and "pretend" sparring. It seemed to be a very close relationship!

Very nice presentation. Looks like the spike has lost an antler and "Dad" is consoling him.
