The most elusive things! Almost impossible to get close to them before they dash into the water and disappear. They love the sun and easy to spot from a distance because the sun reflects a blinding, bright light off their back like a silver platter in the sun. I was very fortunate to see a young one with the adult. Handheld from a boat.

A wonderful find particularly with the youngster. Looks like you did a perfect job of avoiding the glare you described coming off of their backs. The large view is excellent. Well done, AnnaMaria.

Great find. At Bosque, I see them often and your description is exactly right. If not shining, they are covered with mud, but they are really fast movers. I once saw one crossing the road and they are really quick with those webbed feet. My wife thinks they are really different. When submerged with only their heads showing, they look like a miniature alligator. Great to catch the two together and the colors are strong on the adult.

A nice find and well taken, AnnaMaria.  If you look closely the adult appears to be smiling....  :)
