Taken in the Sand River in the Mara.  One day I will get the image I seek, being the eye level view in late pm light, but eye level here was a no / no due to the distinct possibility of being fodder for the crocs.

Left as no cloning, was the young hippo hiding behind who I guess was the mother.  (ears only showing).

techs.  D300 and 500 AF-S at 1/320 F4 ISO 400.

Please feel free to view uncompressed.  Thank you for looking.

You nailed this one, Dave. Impeccable detail, and I love the ears of the young hippo showing. After seeing the hippo skull you posted, this makes me think about the awesome power laying within the jaws of this beast. Great work.

Certainly not deadus........ and they have such a way of looking at you with that 'cold' gaze that seems to say 'keep your distance, and don't tempt me!' ...... You have definitely caught the character of the river horse in this very nice image, Dave, The detail in the uncompressed view is excellent!

I enjoy this image.

Wouldn't want to get too close to a Hippo with a young one it's protecting.
