This poor fella had been in some serious fights and was on his own, away from the herd recuperating.  (polite for I think I came second).

Taken last week.  first signs of frost here, but he was basking in the sunny side of a valley.  Had some cover so got close before I got clocked.  Looked at me for a bit and then went back to grazing.

Good composition and nice look back pose from the dejected buck, Dave. I'm sure there will be many more with wounded pride - and much worse, when the rut is completely over for the year.

Great look-back pose and the composition is perfect for my tastes, Dave. Although he came in second, he is a handsome stag with a very good-looking rack. Excellent work. :)

Deer are rampart here in Australia and are quite destructive in our native forests. They look much more at home in your environment. I like the look back pose and the lovely set of antlers.

Great light David. I also like the story behind the image. Getting both eyes in the picture is a huge plus.

Nice light and pose. That buck really does look like he’s taken a beating or two.

Poor fella- it's a rough life out there, I guess. I like the look back and the light- hope he recovers. Here it is deer hunting season, so I am seeing quite a different sort of view. We are a bit over run with deer too , so it is for the best.

Thanks all for your thoughts. You're right Cindy. Whilst I get excited to see them, a chap I talked to in Carrbridge, Scotland, saw the Roe deer there as pests. Likewise, some hunters see them as essential stock for their larders... Room for all views...
