Wombat - Tasmania

Local knowledge is everything...  Thanks to my friend who grew up in Tasmania who is making this journey with me, he knew right where to go to get these guys in the wild.

Also, for those still wondering about Sony animal eye AF, it works like a charm - in this case the animal was running towards me as fast as he could (which is surprisingly fast), I was framing and zooming out simultaneously, the camera tracked the eye ball using the animal eye AF and every single shot, even the one that was so close that most of the animal was cut-off, it perfectly in focus.

Nice photo. Looks like you were pretty much laying on the ground to get the eye level perspective.

Thanks for your comments about the animal eye focus. Very helpful.

Great test subject for the eye AF. Was this Maria Island?

Great sense of motion- and impressive with the Sony. Hope I don't have to sell all my Nikon stuff! ;)

Maria Island is an island of the east coast of Tasmania and is a major tourist attraction. Most of the island is a national park. Cradle Mountain NP is in the northwest of Tasmania mainland. There are lots of wombats in both locations. Maria Island wombats are very healthy, mainland wombats in Tasmania are inclined to suffer from mange.
