We found this bear on the penultimate day of our expedition to Svalbard. Trip thus far had been underwhelming. And though we spotted this bear early in the morning, we spent over 7 hrs in the zodiac over three separate trips without having any luck to photograph this handsome male polar bear. Finally, when we gave up all hope, it reappeared on the shore at around 7 pm and we could spend 1 hour photographing it against various backgrounds and light conditions. Hence the title!

For this image, to create silhouette, I chose manual mode with 1/1600s, f4.0 ISO 64 to get -1.67 EV values. So image came out pretty much done, not requiring much to be done in post processing except recovering colours in the sky.

Love the silhouette -makes a very dramatic contrast with the sky. I find this a poignant portrayal of the polar bear in it's dark hour.

Great silhouette with an absolutely recognizable subject, diagonal leading line and the legs are free of merges. Perfect timing and just a touch of color.

A fine, clear silhouette of this iconic hunter, Jay.  The late light blush in the background sky takes this striking image to the next level.  Well done!

Passion, patience and persistence- attributes that are so helpful for wildlife photographers, and that paid off well for you here. Lovely silhouette, and the color really makes this special.

Hi Jay, certainly dramatic and the diagonal creates a strong comp. Your choice was good on both techs and going backlit, albeit -1.67EV has pushed the sky to being a bit more dramatic than I think it might have been :) .

Just watch for the halos creeping in against the sky. Was Nakita steering the zodiac?

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

I went with Wildphoto. So no Nakita. I did not have to do much tweaking in PP. So did not observe halos. We all have selective memory, so you might be right about sky -:) (how do you manage to get emoji in there?!)

Excellent Silhoutte! Love the angled slope and the little patches of cloud color . Well done.
