Crabeater Seals
Near Yarlour Islands, Antarctic Peninsula
Nikon D850, 80mm, ISO500, 1/1250, f/14
Handheld from zodiac

Crabeaters are the  most numerous seal in the world.  In spite of the name, though, they eat krill, not crabs.  I liked the variety of colors in the hides in this group.  The dark ones are more freshly molted, and the silvery ones getting ready to molt.
This area, just south of the Lemaire Channel, was a particularly beautiful landscape with lots of bits of ice so I wanted to include it.

Love your control of the whites and darks in this image. This reminds me of a Viewmaster image. Nearly 3D. The edges of the ice are smoothly shaped and neat looking.

I love the way you do these Antarctic animalscapes, Cindy, and this is a beauty! A click for the full view is well worth it, and as Joe says, almost 3D.

Very nice Cindy, I do like the perspective, just being slightly higher and the way the ice pack tappers to the RHS. Looks nicely exposed, but I feel f/11 would have been OK here and then put that extra gain towards SS as you are shooting from a zodiac, minimum 1/2000 I feel. Adding a CPL filter would have helped the glare of the water IMHO, albeit dropped a stop, but with the 850 you had plenty of ISO to play with.

A CPL would have cut the sheen on the seals and would have lost what makes this image pop out from the screen. The seals are more important to the image.

Personal choice Joe, having just come back from 14 days in Svalbard it worked for me when required, whether as a screw or drop-in.  :D

This is a striking image with the beautiful snow-covered rocks and the lazy seals. So colorful and well composed. Must have bee a thrill to see.
