Minke Whale
Charlotte Bay, Antarctic Peninsula Nikon D850, Sigma 24-70 at 28mm ISO1250, 1/200, f/13 Minke are small whales that are notoriously difficult to see. At best you get a glimpse of the dorsal fin as it disappears. We were lucky when zodiac cruising, we spotted one that didn't vanish as we motored in its direction. We stopped at a good distance, and to our great surprise it decided to come over and investigate us. The whale is no more than 1 meter from the zodiac here, would love to have more space below it but there was none. I was lucky to be standing in the right spot with the right gear in hand as the approach happened within seconds and then it was gone. The shot 4 frames later I have part of the zodiac in the image and the fin is within 20cm or so from the boat. Cindy Marple
