A small departure from Polar bears to the humble Walrus.

We found four of these hauled up on a very small pice of pack ice. Both zodiacs launched and taking our time we manouvered very close, a testimony to the skill of the Guides.

Males are far easier to approach providing they are aware of you and so lowering voices is not required, intact the total opposite. To try and approach females even at 300m they would just go. To be so close and being low aided to taking the image.

Thanks to those who posted or viewed on the last posting.

Wonderful detail and intimate view of this large male, Steve! I like the intricate pattern and spread of those iconic whiskers, and its fascinating to see that with relatively small eyes, they can be so expressive. Well done!

Thanks folks, glad you liked it. For me this is a subject that commands detail and hopefully I have delivered that. To have got closer would have been even better, but I'm glad for what I got.

Thanks
Steve

Wonderful portrait with plenty of detail and appeal. Don't see how you could get closer without getting tickled by those amazing whiskers! ;)

Lovely detail in this. The half-open eyes attest to his comfort with your presence. The eye-level perspective is nice too.
