I've seen lots of Dall sheep over the years, but this is the first mature ram I've seen with one horn completely broken off. His left eye was also injured and most likely he was blind in that eye. He was still looking quite healthy so he has adapted. I'd guess the horn was broken off in a fight, but that's purely speculation on my part.

With the weight of the horn on one side only and the visible lean to that side, I bet his neck gets mighty sore and tired. It would probably affect his balance, as well. It would be interesting to know how hard of an impact it would require to break his horn like that. Maybe a bullet? Beautiful light and separation of subject from BG. Nice balance of warm and cool colors.

That's amazing, Tim! Broken tips yes, but to see it broken off so close to the skull, it must have bled a lot with the flow of blood through the horn. He must be a survivor, and does seem to have recovered well as his body looks in good condition, but his fighting days for ewes are over, I guess. A click on the image for the uncompressed view shows the excellent detail you captured here and the light is sweet!

Always good to see you and your work, its been way too long...

Best wishes to you both for a happy, healthy and wonderful 2019.

Carol.
