The terms "Black and White" were confusing to me since they are not distinguished by the color of their hides. Research tells me that both animals actually derive their color from the mud they wallow in and the dust they bathe in. The real difference between the Black and White Rhinoceros lies in the muzzle - the White has a square-shaped one for grazing grasslands, while the Black has a triangular one for browsing. The White actually got its name from a mistranslation of the Dutch word "wijd" that refers to the wide mouth.
