Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
After the first lioness made the initial pounce, two others closed in to surround the buffalo. I was thinking to myself, we could be here for a while, anticipating a long, drawn out death struggle. Suddenly, the entire buffalo herd stormed back, scattering the lions and saving their friend, who looked none the worse for wear. The early morning sun ducked behind the clouds for this shot, unfortunately.
