Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

After the first lioness made the initial pounce, two others closed in to surround the buffalo. I was thinking to myself, we could be here for a while, anticipating a long, drawn out death struggle. Suddenly, the entire buffalo herd stormed back, scattering the lions and saving their friend, who looked none the worse for wear.

The early morning sun ducked behind the clouds for this shot, unfortunately.

Another thrilling frame from this wonderful opportunity - the clean setting really makes this pop.
I do think you can add some midtone contrast (same with the other one), as it seems a hint too light for me and could use some "pop".

The buffalo must have been weak and the lions sensed that. I just find it hard to believe how this buffalo doesn’t show any signs of resistance in either photo. Very unlike a mtypical reaction to being attacked! Great opportunity for you.

Another excellent image from this encounter, John.  Again, getting all four of the faces in view takes this to the next level.  Very well done!

When you click on the image to see the uncompressed view, there is plenty of 'pop' for me - you can definitely see the difference with the smaller one that shows in the forum.  For what its worth, I always click images to get the full version.
