Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

A group of half a dozen lions isolated a Cape buffalo from a small herd on the crater floor, then this lioness made the initial pounce.

Outstanding.
Did you have to maneuver to get this angle or did it fall into place for you?

The buffalo doesn't seemed phased by the passenger on his back! He even has some grass dangling from his mouth. Neat capture.

Thanks for commenting.   We did not maneuver for this angle. My initial shot with the lion on the back was a total side view. As the action unfolded the buffalo was turning to eventually give this angle.  Feel very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.

Classic lioness hunting strategy, with the first pounce by the first lioness as she tries to weaken the buffalo while keeping out of range of those lethal horns.

Superb capture of the fight for survival, John and perfect angle to get both faces of predator and prey. Well done!

Carol.

Love the lighting and moment here John, the fact that you have both eyes visible is what makes this encounter even more special.

As mentioned the action is outstanding. You also managed to get both animals in great focus stem to stern. The circle of life is hard to observe, but it is, after all life. Did the Cape Buffalo survive this attack?

Ed, yes the Buffalo did survive. After a few more lions closed in, the rest of the herd returned to scatter them, and that was that. Will probably post one more photo from this encounter.
