Fur Seal - Saint Paul Island, Alaska
EOS 10D, 300mm, 1/250, f/9, ISO 400

Saint Paul Island in the Pribilofs are situated in the Bering Sea about 700 mile west of Anchorage. This island has just 650 human inhabitants but it has 600,000 Fur Seal inhabitants. These animals can be very dangerous but the island has two blinds that allow escorted photographers to get photos of these magnificent animals. Here is one lounging mid morning under overcast skies.

Love the contrasting colors and textures between the rocks and the seal. Also love the contrast even on the rocks where it looks like the tops are worn smooth, presumably by the seals, and the lichen (?) covered bottoms. I'm curious why you chose to center the seal's head rather than, say, move him (her?) a tad left and wait until he looked back to the right.

Certainly got his eye on you :)
Nice composition, like the way he's nestled amongst the rocks.
Very nice.

Wonderful shot, E.J. Those whiskers and the way he seems to be "giving you the eye" almost remends me of my stern, 6th grade computer programming teacher, Mr. Brunker :-)
Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.

I took several shots of this and this one had the fewest distracting elements and just looked the best to me.

Gotta love those lichen covered rocks as a bg! I'm finding with at least some wildlife situations I'm not overly troubled by the head or eye being centered, when there is as much weight on one side of the image as there is on this one. Yes the eye may be centered but there is not a bull's eye, centered, sensation here, still some good tension with the negative space on the right. Now if the whole animal was in the frame with equal space on left and right of it, it would be a different story.
Just my 2 cents...

He certainly is giving you the eye. I really like the colors in this one. Nice shot EJ.
