Red Squirrel Tamiasciurus hudsonicus

Have never been more charmed by a squirrel than by the industrious Red or Pine Squirrel of the northern Rockies. This one noisily chattered at my even looking at him.

1Ds, 500 mm f/4 L IS + 1.4 X tele (700 mm effective), 1/125 sec @ f/8, -1, ISO 200. Bright afternoon light partially diffused by canopy. As always, I am interested in how the color and contrast appear on your monitor. Thanks!

Color and contrast both look great from here. Love the pose. The position makes this shot since you've got the squirrel against lighter background rather than the darker background just a couple inches away. Very nice. The smallest of nits would be that the right pole were entirely grey, but I prefer it all in as is to cropping the brown out.

Super shot Juli. As Rich pointed out, if you'd got him against that dark background, it wouldn't have had the same impact. Great detail and nice pose. Well done

Very cute, looks like he's been dibbing that nose into some food :) My personal preference would be to see the tail.

The color and contrast are indeed, exquisite, as are the compostion, lighting, and capture of the expression. Nothing to more to add...

I like this very much.

The position of the squirrel, with head and neck extended and catching the light, is very nice.

The framing with the fence posts works well.

Nothing to add after all the comments above. Cute little fellow 8) The strong lines of the wooden fence work very well (geometrically) with your subject.

All the best Juli and nice to meet you here :)

Very cute, very sharp! It seems to have a guilty look, like it was caught eating something that it shouldn't have (maybe some bird seed?).

Very cute Juli. The timber makes in interesting framing and the lighting and background are super. These guys sure can make a lot of noise for their size.

I can almost hear him chattering now.. Very nice shot. I love the pose and think the whole shot works very well as presented.

Beautiful shot, Juli. We were in Wyoming a couple weeks ago and these squirrels were captivating. The white around their eyes add so much personality. The white here echoed in the bg light adds much.

Juli, what a treat this is, from the way the angular light that just clips the nose and continues through the weathered timber to the complimentary colors of the log and paws. Colors and contrast are top rate. Texture of the timber and hair is another thing I like, what puts this over the top for me is that you left the piece of fiber in the whiskers. Showing good long lense technique here I believe.
