Kangaroo Island, South Australia

We had gray, drizzly weather the 2 days on Kangaroo Island.  Koalas do sleep a lot, this one woke up enough to take a look at us and then went back to sleep.
Koalas were introduced to the island a hundred years ago as a precaution from extinction on the  mainland.  Their population has exploded on the island and presents a challenge because they're eating so many leaves that they're killing the manna gum trees that they prefer to eat.  There's an active project to manage the population through sterilization as well as restoration of the habitat, which is having at least some success.

Good to see your images of the Australian wildlife!

This is a classic Koala view and you handled the less than ideal conditions well.  Yes, these iconic marsupials do love their favourite eucalyptus leaves but with very little nutrition they haven't got much energy so sleep a lot.  Just as well you didn't get too close as up to 90% of Koalas have chlamydia which can be passed on to humans through their urine, and they do tend to pee on people who hold them.  Poor things really do have a fight for survival.

Very nice photo taken at a location we visited years ago. Also like the "story" behind the photo. Wish every NSNrs would do the same. When you get back you need to convince Ron (college roommate) and Beth to go  :)

Great image of this unique species. I'd be tempted to clone out the wayward branch on the right ear.
