Kangaroo Island, South Australia
Canon 7DmkII, 100-400 at 300mm, ISO2000, 1/400 f/6.3 cropped from horizontal. We had gray, drizzly weather the 2 days on Kangaroo Island. Koalas do sleep a lot, this one woke up enough to take a look at us and then went back to sleep. Koalas were introduced to the island a hundred years ago as a precaution from extinction on the mainland. Their population has exploded on the island and presents a challenge because they're eating so many leaves that they're killing the manna gum trees that they prefer to eat. There's an active project to manage the population through sterilization as well as restoration of the habitat, which is having at least some success. Cindy Marple
