I know the Image Quality isn't great on this but this is the animal I most wanted to see in Australia.  This was taken in a controlled situation from a hide with glass windows, lit by a spotlight.  I pressed the lens hood up to the glass to reduce reflections and for stability (tripods not useable due to the space arrangement), and fired a burst in an effort to get at least one semi-sharp image.

Devil populations in the past 10 or so years have plummeted due to a highly contagious, fatal, facial cancer type disease, making it hard to find them in the wild any more.  This wild animal is part of a small study population that's been vaccinated and is confined to a 10 hectare / 25 acre compound for a period of time.  I would've preferred seeing them in a truly wild situation, but given the circumstances I was happy to at least get to see the 4 or 5 we were able to view in this setting.  Unfortunately the vaccine is not a cure, but is helping to slow the progression of disease in the innoculated animals.  Research is still ongoing and hoping for more positive news in the future.

I've never seen an image of one of these. Thanks so much for sharing. The sad story of their fate is distressing. Maybe a good benefit, however, would be that the technology used to assist them in their fight against cancer will eventually trickle down to the treatment of some human cancers.

Thanks for sharing the photo and the plight of this most interesting animal Cindy. I wish they could put the meds in their food source so they would continued to get medicated.
